This project, that is funded by the Swedish Research Council, aims to study the representation of the Virgin Mary as a role model for lay people in Sweden during the Middle Ages (c. 1100–1500). The researchers focus on a selection of scenes and stories from the life of Virgin Mary and how they are depicted in the interplay between medieval Marian motifs in Old Swedish texts and visual representations painted, carved or sculpted on church walls as well as on three-dimensional objects such as Madonna sculptures and baptismal fonts.
